Overview

We publish open-access, peer-reviewed original articles, short research notes, short communications, review articles, systematic review articles, case reports, commentaries, perspectives, viewpoints, letters to the editor, book reviews, medical educational materials, and articles on socioeconomic, political, or legal matters related to medical practice.

Article Types

Original Research Articles

Original data not published elsewhere (except as abstract). Structure: Abstract, Introduction, Methodology, Results, Discussion, Conclusion, Acknowledgements, Authors’ contributions, Competing Interests, Funding, Consent (where applicable), Ethical approval (where applicable), References.

Short Research Notes

Single-finding articles or conference posters. Same structure as original research.

Short Communications

Urgent, high-impact preliminary results. Full article expected later.

Follow PRISMA guidelines. Clear question, systematic methods.

Comment on newly published article or topical issue (often invited).

Author’s personal opinions on a topic (no original data).

Letter to the Editor

New insight, corrections, or alternate theories on published work.

Manuscript Formatting

The manuscript should be written in English (British conventions) as a Word document, using Times New Roman font, double-line spacing, and single-column format.

Illustrations, tables, and figures should be placed at their appropriate positions inside the text. Tables should be double-spaced with headings above. Captions for figures go below the figure. Do not duplicate data across tables and figures.

Title Page

Must contain:

  • Brief title (no abbreviations)
  • Author(s) names and affiliations (superscript numbers)
  • Contact info of corresponding author (email, phone with country code)
  • Manuscript type and word count

Abstract

Concise, ≤ 250 words, ≤ 6 keywords. No abbreviations (unless defined at first use).

  • Research Articles: Background, Objective(s), Materials and Methods, Results, Conclusion
  • Case Reports: Background, Case Presentation, Conclusion
  • Perspectives/Viewpoints: Background, Areas covered, Expert Opinion

Main Sections (Full Structure)

Introduction: Background, problem, literature survey, justification.

Materials and Methods: Detailed description; cite published methods.

Results & Discussion: State findings; interpret significance and compare with literature.

Conclusion: Summarize major findings.

Acknowledgements: Support, funding, technical help.

Authors’ Contributions: Specific roles (only those meeting authorship criteria).

Conflict of Interest: Disclose any (or state "none").

Funding: Declare all sources.

Consent: Written informed consent required for case reports (from patient, next of kin, or guardian for minors/incapacitated).

Ethical Approval: Clearance certificate if human subjects involved.

Reference Style

AMA (Vancouver) numbering system. References numbered in order of appearance; cited as superscripts in text. List at end of manuscript.

For >6 authors: list first 6 + “et al.”

Manuscript Submission

Submit to: editor@yobemedicaljournal.com.ng or yobemedicaljournal@gmail.com

Three required documents:

  1. Title page — title, authors, affiliations, contact, manuscript type, word count
  2. Manuscript file — title, abstract, keywords, main text (no author info)
  3. Covering letter — wet-signed by corresponding author, stating:
    • Title of manuscript
    • Submission to Yobe Medical Journal
    • Not published/submitted elsewhere

Submission & Review Timeline

  • ✅ Acknowledgment within 24 hours
  • ✅ Eligibility decision within 72 hours
  • ⏳ Peer review: average 28 days

Plagiarism Policy

All manuscripts screened with Plagiarism Checker X.

  • Minor plagiarism → returned for revision
  • Significant plagiarism → rejected

Reviewers’ Guidelines | Yobe Medical Journal

Reviewers should kindly read through before reviewing manuscripts submitted for publication.

General Principles

Manuscripts must be original, unpublished, and not under consideration elsewhere.

Yobe Medical Journal seldom rejects outright — we work with authors to build publication skills. However, rejection is warranted if the manuscript is:

  • Not technically sound
  • Article type unclear or mismatched with methodology
  • Objectives unmet
  • Lacks current relevance

Review Criteria

Reviewers should check that:

  1. The subject has current relevance and expresses original thought.
  2. Assertions are adequately referenced.
  3. Any borrowed text/figures/tables are cited.
  4. Methods are described with sufficient, comprehensible detail.
  5. Data analysis is satisfactory.
  6. Discussion is robust, evidence-based, and well-compared to literature.
  7. Conclusion is supported by the data.
  8. References are relevant and correctly formatted (AMA/Vancouver); suggest additions if needed.

Reviewer Comments

Your feedback should:

  1. Address each of the above criteria clearly.
  2. Report suspected unethical practice with evidence (citations/links).
  3. Suggest concrete improvements to strengthen the manuscript.
  4. Be sufficiently detailed to aid editorial decision-making.
